This week, we’re also celebrating one of the greatest educators, social advocates and ministerial leaders of our time, our proud Academic Council member of the Pan African Heritage World (PAHW), the iconic Dr. Iva Carruthers, also revered as Mama Iva.

As a Founder and General Secretary of one of the most powerful, most progressive, and most influential African American interdenominational organizations in the world, the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference (SDPC), Dr. Carruthers’ intellectual and experiential knowledge of Pan Africanism is simply prodigious!

Notable Achievements

  • A student of the great Pan African scholars Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop and Dr. John Henrik Clarke, Dr. Carruthers has created a wide-reaching legacy of teaching and engaging in community development initiatives and social justice ministry, particularly involving people of African descent, while fostering interdenominational, interfaith dialogues and Pan African study tours throughout the United States, Caribbean, South America and Africa.
  • Dr. Carruthers served as former director of Black Theology projects and has many educational study guides and books on African American & African history, including authoring the renowned book, “The Church and Reparations” – An African American Perspective, which was distributed as a must read at the 2001 United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance.
  • Further commemorating this United Nations declaration and last year’s 400-year proclamation, Mama Iva led a 50-member delegation to Ghana’s Year of Return and was the main speaker at the PANAFEST Interfaith Dialogue. Dr. Carruthers is a recipient of numerous awards, honors, and postdoctoral fellowships. She continues to pioneer Pan African initiatives worldwide, consistently reinforcing herself as one of the greatest Pan Africanists of our time.

Therefore, we honor Dr. Iva Carruthers for all her great achievements towards Pan Africanism and all her mighty efforts towards the reconciliation and liberation of our Pan African family. For this we say, in the African spirit, Ayeekoo Dr. Iva Carruthers! You have done well!
